Listen - Ashes 1st Test, Day 1 - Harmison: "Aussies edged it"
The months of waiting are finally over as Day 1 of the First Test of the 2009 Ashes series got underway at Glamorgan's SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff.
England finished the day on 336-7 after winning the toss and choosing to bat. Kevin Pietersen was the top scorer, notching 69 before attempting to sweep a ball that was very wide of off stump and in reality should have been left alone.
Paul Collingwood battled to 55 before being caught behind and Matt Prior fired off a quick half-century. Freddie Flintoff contributed 37 with the bat in a mini-blitz during the afternoon session, which saw the hosts score 142 runs off 186 deliveries.
PCA Ambassador Steve Harmison, on behalf of England sponsors Cockspur Rum, the official spirit of English Test Match cricket, says the days' play should hold the home team in good stead.
