Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is thought to be considering a renewed push to sign Portsmouth defender Glen Johnson.
Benitez wants competition for Alvaro Arbeloa at right-back, and Swiss international Phillip Degen has failed to establish himself as a genuine challenger.
Johnson has broken back into the England squad with a series of excellent displays, and Pompey are keen to keep him for next season. The south coast club are thought to have rebuffed a Liverpool enquiry for Johnson in January.
However, Liverpool know a sizeable offer could tempt cash-strapped Portsmouth to do business, and the player himself is aware that performing well at Champions League level could boost his chances of playing for England.
