Reports in Spain suggest Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso is one of Real Madrid's summer transfer targets.

Florentino Perez is keen to secure some major signings as he prepares for a second spell as Real president, and he has been a fan of Alonso since the player's time at Real Sociedad.

Alonso was strongly linked with a move away from Anfield last season as the Reds tried to sign Aston Villa's Gareth Barry, but the skilful playmaker has had one of his best ever seasons and has re-established himself as a key player.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez was willing to sell the Spanish international at the right price last summer, but he now sees Alonso as a vital building-block as he looks to fashion a title-winning squad.

Alonso has shown little desire to quit Anfield, and Liverpool's recent form has no doubt convinced him the team is heading in the right direction.

It appears only an astronomical offer from Real will tempt Liverpool to do business, and the Reds may head off any interest by offering the player a new deal.
