Listen - Blackburn - Ince wants Bentley commitment
Listen - Paul Ince press conference!
It's been a fast rise for Paul Ince as he becomes the first ever black English Premier League manager. Following in the footsteps of Ruud Gullit and Jean Tigana, Ince's meteoric rise to the top of the football leagues has been as swift as it has been successful.
The former England man's managerial career so far has been a short experience, and yet a very notable one. Starting in the summer of 2006, Ince suffered his first set back before ever taking a coaching position - he was turned down by Wolves, the last club he played for, who preferred the experience of Mick McCarthy. The rejection led to an outburst from Ince, who claimed football still had racist elements within, citing his failure to land the Wolves job down to his colour.
However, he had to wait just a few months to make his mark. He was offered the role of rock bottom League 2 side Macclesfield Town. The side were considered absolute bankers for relegation out of the Football League, with over 10 points separating them from safety. However, Ince ensured they escaped with a couple of games to go, his achievement catching the eye of Pete Winkleman, chairman of Milton Keynes Dons. In his one and only season he guided the side to the League 2 title, despite the departures of star strikes Izale McLeod and Clive Dunn.
And so, on to Blackburn Rovers. From the dejection of being turned down by Wolves, whom he served with pride for a number of seasons, he's made it back to the Premier League before them to become the fourth ex-Manchester United player from that awesome early 90's team to become a manager, following in the footsteps of Steve Bruce, Roy Keane and his predecessor at Ewood Park, Mark Hughes.
In his first press conference since taking the role, Ince maintained his first priority was to secure David Bentley's future, after the England international admitted he felt he needed to leave following Rovers' failure to reach the UEFA Cup.
