Listen - Champions League Final - Chelsea 1-1 Man Utd (Man Utd win 6-5 on pens) - Grant gutted at shootout heartache

Avram Grant's reaction to the Champions League shoot out loss!

The hype didn't disappoint as in the end Manchester United and Chelsea played out a cracking tie in terrential rain in Moscow - a fitting tribute to the competition as tackles flew in and tempers frayed, with numerous attempts on goal alleviating any pre-match concerns of a bore.

Manchester United took the lead before the half hour mark as Cristiano Ronaldo nodded home his 42nd goal of the season whilst Carlos Tevez and Michael Carrick were thwarted by a superb double stop by Petr Cech.

Just as it seemed as if United would go in to the break ahead, Frank Lampard pounced to slot home after Michael Essien's shot found its way to him via two deflections.

Whilst Chelsea could have been considered fortunate not to find themselves behind, the second half was dominated by the Blues in the Luzhniky Stadium in Moscow. Didier Drogba hit the post before Frank Lampard did the same in extra time whilst John Terry magnificently blocked Ryan Giggs effort on the goal line. Didier Drogba's ridiculous sending off for an unnecessary slap just before the end of the match was the latest example of how high tensions were on the pitch.

So in to penalties and Chelsea had the ascendancy. Ronaldo missed from the spot and it was left to the captain to secure the win with the final spot kick. Alas, it wasn't to be as a slip reminiscent of David Beckham saw the ball clip the wrong side of the post and behind.

Nicolas Anelka then missed Chelsea's 7th penalty of the night to make it an unlucky treble for Avram Grant's men - they finished runners' up in the League Cup, Premier League & now the Champions League this season.

Speaking after the match, Avram Grant admitted he was heartbroken to lose out in such a way but was adamant no blame should be cast the way of John Terry.
