Listen - Champions League Semi-Final 1st Leg: Liverpool 1-1 Chelsea - Grant praises 'deserved' draw
Listen to Avram Grant's post-Liverpool press conference!
The 5th meeting between the two sides in Europe in the past 3 years always had two things missing - a match with more than one goal and a strike for the away side. Chelsea had not scored at Liverpool and vice versa in Europe.
And for 94 minutes of the match it seemed as if that record would stay in tact. Dirk Kuyt had given the home side the lead with a goal just before half time, sweeping home past the advancing Petr Cech.
Despite some Chelsea pressure in the second half it was all Liverpool towards the end. First Steven Gerrard had his shot saved brilliantly by Cech before Fernando Torres close range effort was saved again by the Czech number 1.
But John Arne Riise's late late own goal saved the day for Chelsea. Salomon Kalou's cross from the left was too tempting for the Norwegian left back, who opted to try to clear with his head rather than his weaker right foot. The header skewed past Pepe Reina and the momentum in the tie switched instantly.
Speaking after the match, Avram Grant said he believed it was no more than his side deserved whilst Chelsea remained on course for their first ever Champions League Final.
