Listen - Champions League Quarter-Final 2nd Leg: Liverpool (5) 4-2 (3) Arsenal - Benitez delighted
Listen to Rafa Benitez' post-Arsenal press conference!
Another spine-tingling European affair at Anfield, the home of the most successful English club in the Champions League, saw a breath-taking encounter between two of England's top sides fight it out for the third time in 6 days - evidently saving the best till last.
The first half hour though could have produced a different result as Arsenal swept aside the hosts and deservedly took the lead on 16 minutes through Abou Diaby. The Gunners' maintained their dominance and could have scored more until the ever-reliable Sami Hyypia nodded home a corner via the post. Fernando Torres' goal in the second half may have been a relief for the home fans, but in fact it set up a delicate affair - a goal for Arsenal would not only square the match, but put them through on away goals.
So when Steven Gerrard kicked air, substitute Theo Walcott picked the ball up and ran the length of the pitch with six minutes to go, sliding across for Emmanuel Adebayor to slot home from 10 yards. That should have been it but within 60 seconds the tide turned yet again as Kolo Toure's challenge on Ryan Babel inside the box was deemed a penalty by Swedish referee Peter Frojdfelt. Gerrard slotted home before Babel's game-changing cameo was further shown as he broke forward, held off Cesc Fabregas' challenge and slid the ball into the net deep in injury time.
Speaking after the match, Rafa Benitez said he was overjoyed at progressing through to yet another semi-final against Chelsea.
